While I wouldn't
call myself a photographer, I love taking pictures. Especially at sporting
events and when I go on vacation. I've been using some incarnation of the Canon
S series for the last 3 years or so. Currently I have a S3 IS and I love it.
It's got 12x optical zoom which allows me to take some great pictures at
football games and races even when I'm pretty far away from the action. I've
also gotten some rather good shots at concerts. It's also got a nifty screen
that flips and swivels which is VERY useful for a shorty like me. I can hold the
camera up over my head to shoot over tall people in my way, and tilt the screen
down so I can see what I'm actually shooting. The only downside to this camera
is its bulky size. While it's no SLR camera, it's still pretty big...too big to
throw in the purse and carry it around with me.
The S3 ISI decided I want to
have a small pocket size camera to supplement my S3. Best Buy ran the camera I
was looking at on sale last weekend, and between giftcards and rewardzone
certificates, I got it for next to nothing out of pocket. Very cool. I went with
the Canon Digital Elph SD1100 IS. I love how small this camera is. But I also
love that despite its size, it still has a 2.5 inch display and an acutal
optical viewfinder. Optical viewfinders are hard to come by in ditigal
point-and-shoot models these days, but they are way useful when you are using
the camera outdoors in very bright conditions. I also went with this camera
because Canon makes a waterproof case for it. When I go on my trip to NZ, there
will be a few times where I'll be around water...like in a boat...and would
never take the risk of ruining my S3. If I were to get the waterproof case for
the SD1100, I could take pictures while doing these wet activities. I could also
use it in the rain without worry. It is also useful for using the camera in
sandy conditions, like the beach, where there is always the risk of messing up a
camera by getting sand in the gears. I haven't made a decision about the
waterproof case, as it's a bit expensive, but I'm giving it some serious
thought. My cousin has a case similar to this for her Canon Elph and it works
really well.
